  • People Are Sharing Stories About A Time Their Job Put Them On A Performance Improvement Plan, And Some Of Them May Need An Attorney Immediately

We recently shared a story about an HR professional who went viral for giving people advice about navigating a PIP — aka a performance improvement plan — at work.

    TikTok: @johanas_world / Via tiktok.com

Johana Saimbeau, known as @Johanas_world on TikTok, told people they should request a copy of their PIP, and document everything that happens at work moving forward, but that it doesn’t have to mean the end of a job.

Her advice encouraged people to share stories in the comments about a time when they were put on a PIP, or when they had to put someone on a PIP. Here’s what they said:

1.“I have put two employees on PIPs.”

<div> <p>"One of them was fired, and the other ended up excelling. It totally depends on if the manager is actually trying to help you or if they want you out. Look for all of the signals that tell you the manager’s motivations. It’s not always about firing, but it can be!"</p> <p>—<a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/shmoolie666" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:shmoolie666;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">shmoolie666</a></p> </div><span> NBC / Via <a href="https://go.redirectingat.com/?id=74679X1524629&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.buzzfeed.com%2Fashleyholt1%2Fpeople-placed-on-pips-share-stories&url=https%3A%2F%2Fgiphy.com%2Fgifs%2Ffallontonight-tonightshow-jimmyfallon-eddieredmayne-wRhliT6OuZAvWjqilY&xcust=7800076%7C0%7CRSS%7C0&xs=1" data-i13n="elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized" rel="sponsored" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:giphy.com;elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-with-clickid etailiffa-link">giphy.com</a></span>

2.“I inherited an employee who had been on a PIP for six months.”

“I told him it would be extended for another six weeks due to me being new in the position. He failed to show up to the first meeting. I gave him another chance, and he declined that meeting, too. He was legitimately surprised when I terminated him, and he followed up with a disability claim, saying he tore his achilles on the way to his termination. The organization settled for $20k and a job-training grant.”

3.“I told an employer I was having a family medical emergency and probably needed to take time off.”

“I had the time accrued, but I got a PIP out of the blue later that week for a period of 10 business days. It was also a day before my direct manager left for a week of vacation. Two of the three points they alleged were in need of improvement were a STRETCH. It seemed like they just wanted to do it and push it through before my manager’s vacation ended. When I asked what the multiple outcomes could be, they were intentionally vague, especially the HR representative.

I later asked for a meeting with the person covering for my manager to discuss a client’s need. *Bloop* HR representative’s mug pops up. I was being terminated on day three of the PIP. I was fired for ‘something I said.’ When I asked what it was verbatim, HR refused to tell me what I said or to whom it was, TWICE.

So I refused to sign the 25-page separation agreement, and filed with the Department of Human Rights after I called a lawyer. I refused to take their hush pennies. It was the universe telling me to change directions. I had an ulcer and chest pain every day I worked there. I found a better job, better position, better flex hours, and way more money. I am still pursuing the case against them. They did it so they didn’t have to pay me for the time off for Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), and possible bereavement time as well. Dirty, dirty ethics and a dirty company, I hope they have the 2025 they deserve.”

4.“I was put on a PIP because a coworker who was pretending to be my friend made stuff up about me to my manager.”

    Person looking surprised

“They said that my staff complained about me. In fact, HER staff complained to me about her, and I told them she was misunderstood and a good person. My manager never bothered to substantiate any of the alleged reports from my staff. I figured that out when I asked my staff to tell me how they really felt about me, and they were all so confused. I learned that my manager never bothered to ask them and took the other girl’s word at face value, so I quit.”

5.“I wasn’t put on a PIP per se, but I did get a written warning that was a complete shock.”

“Some of their examples to justify the warning included: During a daily meeting I had my arms crossed and muttered under my breath (which I do all the time, and not in a mean way). They claimed I showed frustration through body language or some nonsense. Apparently I packed up my desk indicating to them that I would be leaving soon (um, I cleaned off my desk because it was SUPER MESSY, and if they’d bothered to look through my desk, they would’ve seen everything was there, just put away).

I was able to get the warning rescinded, but I had to meet with my supervisor weekly. In the first meeting he claimed, ‘You were doodling in your notebook during the team meeting.’ So I read him the NOTES I had taken to prove him wrong. It was way downhill after that, and some shit went down: Mental health, leave of absence, and I ended up quitting instead of going back, but my unemployment was approved.”

    —bougiegazelle40

6.“I was constantly hounded and given new requirements beyond what others had by both my manager and the department director.”

“Every weekly meeting was with both of them when it was only supposed to have been with my manager. I went through hell with them for three months and still ended up getting fired. At the end of the 60-day PIP, they extended it another 60 days, saying they didn’t have enough data. Seriously?? How can upcoming due dates qualify as ‘not meeting expectations’ when everything to date has been on time?! I now have a complaint in the investigation process with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) because I am disabled. I requested a reasonable accommodation which they denied three times.”

    —uniquecat265

7.“I was placed on a PIP and given 30 days to reach a sales figure no one was getting…”

Woman standing indoors with arms crossed

“…all because a few big sales I had been chasing were taking their time. This was six months into the job. I was still very new to their process.I learned it was because I ‘kept making the same request.’ But it was because the dumbass manager kept asking the same question, so I had the same hanging issue for three months, which was fixed after I left.”

    —venkmanphd

8.“I was doing reasonably well at a job until the longest-employed person retired.”

“After that, my manager stopped working with me. I would ask for work and was told ‘there’s nothing for you to do.’ While extra work was being given to the other employee who was hired the same day I was. When my manager wanted to have a one-on-one, she invariably used the compliment sandwich technique on me. That’s when you say something positive, then get to the meat of the matter (always negative), and finally, say something else positive. I recognized it for the manipulation it was.

Finally, I was put on a PIP, and that’s when I knew I had to get out of there. When I told my husband I had to leave, he replied, ‘Good! It isn’t normal to cry after every shift, which is what you’ve been doing.’

It was the only time I’ve quit without being eligible for unemployment. My mental health was suffering so much that I was willing to go without a paycheck while looking for another job. Luckily for me, my next job turned out to be a MUCH better fit.”

    —ladicair

9.“I’ve had to put people on PIPs. But it’s not something I’ve ever wanted to do for a whole host of reasons…”

Woman being interviewed on MTV News

“…including that I may like you as a person. I want all of my reports to succeed and continue to grow in their roles, plus, it’s a ton of work for me.

I HATE the advice that if you get a PIP it means you’re going to be fired. I don’t want to fire you, but I do need you to do your job at the level you were hired (and I’m paying you) at.

If you’re not able to do your job, then I probably don’t want to fire you, but I need someone who can do the job at the expected level. While there may be crappy companies that do use PIPs to avoid having to cite other reasons to let you go, it’s hard for me to think this is the norm. Hiring takes sooooo much time and energy, and putting someone on a PIP and firing them does as well.”

10.“As an HR director I always make sure that PIPs are given out so that the employee has the opportunity to improve.”

“They should be given to someone you want to keep who has potential but is struggling. If a manager wants to get rid of someone and needs a paper trail, I will go the verbal warning, written warning, and termination route.”

    —patrisiabb13

11.“I was put on a PIP recently. I work in a medical lab, and I have made zero errors.”

Two women in an office setting, one gesturing confidently

“I’m just slow at my job. They seem to value quantity over quality of work, and I get reprimanded for others’ mistakes.”

12.“I was put on a PIP the second week into a job…”

“…when my mistakes weren’t egregious and were expected for a new hire. The manager expected me to accomplish their goals in two days. I voluntarily resigned the day after I was put on the PIP.”

    —leager129

13.“I started job hunting as soon as my old manager mentioned the possibility of me getting put on a PIP.”

“It was such a morale hit that I knew my work would suffer if it got that far.”

15.And finally, “I’ve managed people for over a decade and put employees on PIPs before, and this is what I will say…”

“1) Yes, companies put people on PIPs because they want to fire them, mostly because, from a legal standpoint, putting someone on a PIP and documenting incompetence while showing the employer’s effort protects the company from having to pay unemployment or wrongful termination.

    2) Your manager does not want to do a PIP any more than you want to. It’s a lot of extra time and effort for them to conduct a PIP. Nine times out of ten, by the time we are at a PIP, it is less work to train a new person than it is to try to re-train you. Especially when the odds are I have to train a new person at the end of it anyway.

    3) With all this said, there were absolutely employees who were put on a PIP that just needed the extra time and attention and were totally worth it.

    4) The truth: They could have fired you immediately, but instead you have a few months where you are still getting paid, and you can start looking for a new job and quit before getting fired.

    5) I have never done a PIP where the person got fired and didn’t go on to a better position they liked more. Never. A PIP doesn’t mean you suck, it means it’s a bad fit.”

    —floatingbee536

Reading these responses made me wish more people knew how common it is to find yourself in this situation. So, I have to know, have you ever been placed on a PIP, or placed someone on a PIP, and what was the outcome? Let us know in the comments.

  • Rickey Henderson, ‘greatest of all time,’ dies at 65

Rickey Henderson, the greatest leadoff hitter and base stealer in Major League Baseball history whose blazing speed, discerning eye and unusual home run power complemented an irrepressible swagger that led him from the sandlots of Oakland, California, to the Baseball Hall of Fame, died Friday. He was 65.

The Henderson family released a statement Saturday evening confirming the Hall of Famer’s death.

“A legend on and off the field, Rickey was a devoted son, dad, friend, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a truly humble soul,” the statement from his wife Pamela and his three daughters read. “Rickey lived his life with integrity, and his love for baseball was paramount. Now, Rickey is at peace with the Lord, cherishing the extraordinary moments and achievements he leaves behind.”

The family did not announce a cause of death but did thank the doctors and nurses at UCSF hospital, which they said cared for Henderson with “dedication and compassion.”

With a fearless, flamboyant style of play, which thrilled some players and fans thirsting for theatrical energy from a sport known for its staidness and irritated others who believed the iconoclastic approach to the game disrespected old traditions, Henderson broke boundaries alongside reams of records during a 25-year career spent with nine teams.

In a sport that relies on the historical consistency of its numbers, Henderson obliterated the record book, owning the all-time stolen-base record with 1,406, an astounding 468 more than the St. Louis Cardinals great Lou Brock, who held the record of 938 for a dozen years before Henderson surpassed him in 1991. Henderson holds the records for the most stolen bases in a single season with 130 in 1982, the most times leading the league in steals with 12 and most consecutive years leading the league in steals with seven. As a 39-year-old in 1998 with Oakland, Henderson became the oldest player in history to lead the American League in steals with 66.

Following his final season in 2003, Henderson finished with 3,055 hits and left the game holding the all-time marks in steals, runs scored (2,295) and walks (2,190), a record now held by Barry Bonds (2,558). He was named to 10 All-Star Games and finished his career with 111.1 Wins Above Replacement, third most of anyone in the past half-century, behind only Bonds and Alex Rodriguez, both of whom used performance-enhancing drugs.

Henderson was a first-ballot inductee to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009, receiving votes from 94.8% of electors.

“I’ve been saying this for years: Rickey wasn’t just great. That doesn’t say enough for me,” Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson once said. “He’s one of the top 10 to 12 players of all time. That’s how good Rickey was.”

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred called Henderson “the gold standard of base stealing and leadoff hitting” in a statement Saturday.

“Rickey epitomized speed, power and entertainment in setting the tone at the top of the lineup. When we considered new rules for the game in recent years, we had the era of Rickey Henderson in mind,” Manfred said, referencing recent rule changes that have encouraged more stolen base attempts. “Rickey earned universal respect, admiration and awe from sports fans. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my deepest condolences to Rickey’s family, his friends and former teammates, A’s fans and baseball fans everywhere.”

Over his quarter century in the game, which included four separate stints with his hometown A’s, Henderson won World Series championships with Oakland in 1989 and Toronto in 1993. The American League MVP with Oakland in 1990, Henderson redefined the role of a leadoff hitter by injecting unprecedented offensive power to the traditional leadoff role of reaching base. He launched 297 home runs, including a major league-record 81 to lead off a game.

For all of the records, however, Henderson left perhaps his most indelible mark on the game with his boisterous on-field presence, celebrating home runs with a hop, a jersey tug and, when the mood struck, one of the slowest trots in the game. He claimed to channel boxing great Muhammad Ali through his play. When he stole his 939th base on May 1, 1991, to break Brock’s all-time record — nine years after he had smashed Brock’s single-season record — Henderson plucked the third-base bag out of the ground, held it high above his head and proclaimed, in an on-field celebration of the moment, “I am the greatest of all time.”

His snatch catch — ripping the ball out of the air before it landed into his glove and slapping his hip in one motion — made fielding look like sleight of hand, to the annoyance of baseball purists. He introduced the play on the final out of Mike Warren’s 1983 no-hitter for Oakland against the Chicago White Sox.

Henderson believed his style was preordained. Born in a Chicago snowstorm on Christmas Day 1958, Rickey Nelson Henley was named after the 1950s teen idol Ricky Nelson. According to family legend, his mother Bobbie went into labor before entering the hospital and nurses delivered the child from the car. When his father arrived frantic and late to the hospital, demanding to see his wife, nurses told him, “Calm down! The boy’s already in the back seat.” Over the years, Henderson would relay the story as proof of his destiny to be baseball’s greatest base stealer. “I was born fast,” he would say.

Rickey was the fourth of Bobbie’s five boys. When he was three, she left Chicago and moved the family to her mother’s farm in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. When he was 10, in 1969, Bobbie Earl joined the second Black migration, relocating the family from Pine Bluff to Oakland. In Oakland, Bobbie met Paul Henderson and had two girls.

Henderson attended Oakland Technical High School and immediately joined a dynastic legacy of Oakland talent that included baseball greats Joe Morgan, Curt Flood, Vada Pinson and Frank Robinson, as well as NBA greats Bill Russell and Paul Silas. Along with Dave Stewart, Lloyd Moseby, Gary Pettis and Rudy May, Henderson was part of a second generation of Oakland preps to play professional sports.

At Oakland Tech, when Henderson was beginning his senior year, he met Pamela Palmer, a freshman who kept statistics for the track and football teams. The two dated and would be together for the next 50 years, officially marrying in 1991. They would have two girls.

Henderson preferred football to baseball, but his mother steered him to baseball because she was convinced his body would not withstand the physical contact of the NCAA and NFL. Henderson was drafted in the fourth round by the A’s in the 1976 draft. Three years later, he made his major league debut for Oakland as a 20-year-old in June 1979, the bright spot on a team in the middle of a massive rebuild following Oakland’s World Series dynasty teams under former owner Charles O. Finley from 1971 to 1975.

His dynamism on full display from the beginning, Henderson truly arrived in his first full season in 1980, when Billy Martin was named manager. Unleashed by Martin, Henderson broke Ty Cobb’s 65-year-old American League stolen base record of 96 by swiping 100 bags in 126 tries. The next year, during the strike-shortened 1981 season, the A’s — nicknamed Billyball for Martin’s aggressive baserunning style — made the playoffs for the first time in six years but lost to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series.

The A’s called Henderson “one of the greatest baseball players of all time” in a statement posted to social media Saturday.

With a propensity to refer to himself in the third person and to be at the center of often preposterous stories that bordered on the apocryphal, Henderson was one of the game’s great characters, in the mold of baseball greats Satchel Paige and Yogi Berra. Stories about Henderson were as legendary as his play, such as the true story of him once framing a million-dollar bonus check and hanging it on his wall — without first cashing it.

Henderson often sneered at baseball’s conventions and did what he wanted to do, which made him a legend to younger baseball fans and players. For the game’s establishment struggling through a tumultuous era of labor strife, however, Henderson represented a new generation of player in the new world of free agency and the millions of dollars now available to players. Unlike previous generations, Henderson was unafraid to demand the high salaries he believed his play merited.

“Beyond the statistics and the awards, Rickey captivated crowds with how he played the game, and it earned him a heartfelt following, especially in his beloved Oakland,” MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said in a statement. “He inspired future generations with his speed, aggressiveness, and trademark neon green batting gloves. Off the field, he never ceased to entertain with his colorful quotes and references to himself in the third person. He was an American original, in every sense of the term.”

After six years in Oakland highlighted by record-breaking seasons and several high-profile contract battles, Henderson was traded in December 1984 to the Yankees, where he brought his particular brand of showmanship to a team bereft of it following the departure of Reggie Jackson. Henderson was traded back to Oakland in 1989, leading a powerhouse A’s team to consecutive pennants in 1989 and 1990, including a World Series title in 1989, sweeping San Francisco in the Bay Bridge Series defined by the Loma Prieta earthquake that struck during Game 3 and delayed the series for 10 days. Henderson led the A’s to another playoff appearance in 1992, a six-game loss in the AL Championship Series to eventual champions Toronto.

“I traded Rickey Henderson twice and brought him back more times than that. He was the best player I ever saw play. … Nine different teams, one unforgettable player. Sandy gonna miss Rickey.”

Former A’s general manager Sandy Alderson

For all the flamboyance and hilarity, Henderson was one of the great players of any era. His best season came with the Yankees in 1985, when Henderson led the league with 146 runs and 80 stolen bases, hit .314/.419/.516 with 24 home runs and finished third in AL MVP voting. Henderson continued to produce, his on-base percentage still regularly hovering around .400, a hallowed threshold generally reserved for Hall of Famers. Henderson finished his career at .401.

When he returned to Oakland in 1989, his signature performance in the 1989 ALCS against the Blue Jays was one of the great devastations of an opponent in playoff history. In Henderson’s MVP season the next year, he tied a career high with 28 home runs, stole 65 bases and hit .325/.439/.577. In 1993, the A’s shipped him out again, sending the then-34-year-old to Toronto. He secured his second championship ring that October, standing on second base for one of the great moments in the game’s history, Joe Carter’s World Series-winning three-run home run off Philadelphia closer Mitch Williams.

For the final 10 seasons of his career, Henderson would crisscross baseball, returning to the A’s twice more, the San Diego Padres twice, the Anaheim Angels, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox and finally, in 2003, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Part of his aura emanated from his physical appearance. Once, in the 1980s with the Yankees, he won the team’s competition of lowest body fat, at 2.9%. Years later, at 40, Henderson looked the part of a man half his age. He never lifted weights. He would do push-ups and sit-ups nightly, flexing his pipes and flashing his abs to all who cared to see. In 1999, he batted .315 and got on base for the Mets more than 42% of the time. He played his last game at 44 years, 268 days old Sept. 19, 2003, for the Dodgers, and his stolen base total remains more than 1,000 ahead of the current active leader.

True to his reputation as an ageless showman, Henderson never officially retired from MLB — teams simply stopped calling. Pamela Henderson would say Rickey, even in his early 60s, believed he could still play if only another team would give him a chance.

“We would sit there over breakfast, and he would watch the TV,” she once said. “And he would see how much today’s players were making — and he would look at their stats and say, ‘I can do that.’”

  • NFL Week 16 Power Rankings: Buccaneers getting hot at the right time; Lions fall to fourth after loss to Bills

There is a team lurking in the NFC that nobody will want to play come playoff time.

    It’s the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

I thought the Bucs could be a playoff team this season. In fact, I picked them to win the NFC South. But after watching them do what they did to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, I am even more impressed by what they are as a team.

After falling behind, 17-10, in the second quarter, looking like a team that would flounder on the road, the Bucs scored 30 unanswered points in the second half on their way to a 40-17 blowout.

The Bucs had 505 total yards, 222 on the ground, and Baker Mayfield threw four touchdown passes against the league’s top-ranked scoring defense. The Tampa Bay defense harassed Justin Herbert all day long and limited him to 195 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. In the second half, he couldn’t do much of anything.

The Bucs are now 8-6 heading to the final three games, leading the NFC South. Mayfield is a big reason why. He has 32 passing touchdowns, the most of his career. He threw two to Mike Evans on Sunday, both on big plays for the veteran receiver. When you combine a tough, bruising running attack with Mayfield’s right arm, the offense is tough to stop.

The defense has had injury issues all season, but getting their corners healthy and getting defensive lineman Calijah Kancey going has been big for that unit. The starting safeties are still out, but the backups held up against Herbert.

Tampa Bay is up to 12th in my Power Rankings this week. It closes the season with a road game at Dallas this week, followed by home games against the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints. Those teams have a combined record of 14-28, which means the Bucs have a real shot to run the table.

If they do, they’ll win the NFC South, clinch the third or fourth seed in the playoffs and play a home game. Like I said, nobody will want to play this team in the postseason. They can score on anybody and when the defense is healthy, that unit can be really good — a great mix of young and old on that side of the ball.

Tampa Bay showed last year it could win with Mayfield and gang in the playoffs. Now they are seasoned some, which should make them even more dangerous this time around. That’s why they have to be considered a team that can go on a run in the playoffs and seem to be getting hot at just the right time.

Bo Nix had a rough outing against the Colts, but they still found a way to win a game where he didn’t play well. The defense makes a lot of big plays. 2 9-5-0

    Commanders

They looked dominant for much of the game against the Saints, but wilted late and made it a close game. They can’t do that this week against the Eagles or they will pay. 2 9-5-0

    Rams

They now lead the NFC West, which is amazing. Sean McVay deserves a ton of credit for getting this team to this position. 2 8-6-0

    Buccaneers

As they get healthier, they get better. Baker Mayfield is having his best season yet. 2 8-6-0

    Chargers

That was a horrible showing against the Bucs. They have lost two straight and now face a big Thursday game on the road against the Broncos. 4 8-6-0

    Texans

They have clinched the AFC South, but the next three weeks have to be about getting right for the playoffs. It’s still not like we expected so far for their offense. 1 9-5-0

    Seahawks

They got pushed around by the Packers and now face a tough final three games with Geno Smith banged up. Their playoff chances don’t look great. 5 8-6-0

    Cardinals

They impressed in beating up on the Patriots to keep their playoff hopes alive. Kyler Murray bounced back after a few tough games. 1 7-7-0

    Colts

The Jonathan Taylor mistake of dropping the ball as he went into the end zone could end up costing them a chance to make the playoffs. What a horrible play that turned a victory into a loss against the Broncos. 1 6-8-0

    Bengals

It’s a shame they probably won’t make the playoffs because the offense is dynamic. Joe Burrow has been MVP good all year. 2 6-8-0

    Dolphins

They are basically done now after losing to the Texans. Tua Tagovailoa had a rough day on a stage where they needed him to be better. 1 6-8-0

Brock Purdy came up small in a big game against the Rams. They have an outside shot at the playoffs, but they can’t afford another loss. 1 6-8-0

They stayed alive in the division race by beating the Raiders on Monday night, but it sure wasn’t pretty. Kirk Cousins still doesn’t look right. 7-7-0

„Instantaneu, toată lumea înnebunește”, a continuat ea.

  • People Are Sharing The Time They Saw A Doctor About Something Seemingly “Minor” That Ended Up Being Incredibly Significant

It’s everyone’s worst nightmare: You go to the doctor for something that seems relatively minor, only to discover it’s a symptom of a much bigger issue. Well, over on Quora, people were discussing their own experiences of this exact scenario. Here are some of their stories.

1.“Years ago, I was eating a burger when suddenly, after taking a bite, I could no longer open my mouth. I was terrified and had no idea what had happened. I’ve dealt with TMJ pain for many years and assumed it had to be just that. Maybe a warm compress and massaging my jaw would unlock my mouth. Nothing seemed to work, and I could only fit about the size of my pinky in my mouth. I couldn’t even fit a spoon in. So I made an appointment with an oral surgeon to figure out what was happening…”

Person enjoying a hamburger, with focus on a close-up bite, capturing a moment of eating satisfaction

“…He did a physical exam and immediately knew it must be an issue with the disc in my jaw joint. He scheduled an urgent surgery to get it put back in but ordered an MRI to go over, just to be certain. The morning of surgery, he met with me briefly before it was time to go under. He said, ‘We got your results back from the MRI, and there are two things I need to go over with you.’ First, they confirmed the disc in my jaw slipped out and did not fit back in when I took that bite out of my burger. So, surgery was definitely needed to correct the issue.

Secondly, he said, ‘I need you to see a neurologist. We found a mass in your brain. I can’t diagnose this for you. Take a copy of your MRI to get this checked out as soon as possible.’ At that moment, which is all I really had to process what he said, my entire world just stopped. This was the most unexpected and terrifying news to receive just minutes before I was to go under for jaw surgery. I will never forget the way I felt. It turned out to be a large cyst wedged in between the fossas of the left temporal lobe of my brain. Something my doctors closely monitor but are unable to remove at the moment. It still makes me anxious whenever I think about it, especially since it’s still there and growing gradually each year.”

2.“When I was 35 years old, I noticed a red splotch on my right breast after I got out of the shower one morning. I didn’t give it much thought until it didn’t go away after a few days and started swelling. I went to my doctor, and she thought that I had mastitis and prescribed an antibiotic. It still wouldn’t disappear, so she prescribed a second course…”

“…One day, I did an internet search for ‘red spot on breast,’ and the first thing that came up was a webpage about inflammatory breast cancer. It was very rare, but I knew when I read the symptoms. I went back to my doctor, and she sent me to a breast specialist, who immediately scheduled a biopsy. As it turned out, I had stage three inflammatory breast cancer, which is an extremely aggressive and fast-spreading cancer with a 45% survival rate. That was 12 years ago, and my surgery, chemo, and radiation were successful. The best advice I can offer everyone is to trust your gut and advocate for yourself.”

3.“My sister experienced constipation a few years back. After about nine days of no bowel movements and her being very uncomfortable, we took her to urgent care. They did an x-ray and told us to go to the ER because she had a bowel obstruction. We took her to the ER, where they did a CT scan and blood work. We were told a couple of hours later that it was a large mass in her colon that was completely obstructing her bowels. They admitted her and scheduled a colonoscopy the next day for a biopsy…”

“…After the colonoscopy, the doctor came out to say it was a tumor and most likely cancerous. She was diagnosed at age 40 with Stage II A colon cancer, with no prior symptoms other than constipation. She had surgery to remove the tumor, and after 12 rounds of chemo, she was in remission. Fast forward to May 2018, my mom started experiencing pain in the area of her gall bladder.

I rushed her to the hospital, and they said yes, she had gallstones trying to pass, and they needed to do surgery the next day to remove the gallbladder. After surgery, the surgeon came up to me with pictures and a grim look on his face. In removing her gall bladder, they found that her liver was completely cirrhotic. She had advanced-stage liver cirrhosis and was never a drinker.

Looking back, the only prior symptom she had was itching on her back, belly, and arms, which we found was caused by increased bilirubin levels. Her doctor just prescribed antihistamines and didn’t think to check her liver. If her gallbladder had not flared up, no telling when we would have figured it out. After she left the hospital, we went to a specialist who told us her only option was a liver transplant. They did not allow living donors where we live, so she remained on the donor list. Unfortunately, she passed away in September 2022 after never receiving a transplant.”

4.“I had a shooting pain in my cheek. Of course, I thought it was my teeth. I went to the dentist. They pulled my wisdom teeth. Gave me painkillers and sent me home. As soon as the painkillers were all taken and gone. The pain came back worse than ever. I went to my doctor…”

Person touching their jawline, appearing to check or feel along their neck and jaw area

“…I was put through a battery of tests. After seeing a neurologist, I finally had a diagnosis. Trigeminal neuralgia is damage to the nerve that controls movement in your face. After trying medicine after medicine, they finally put me on an anticonvulsant. I was on this medicine for a year in the hopes that the damage was temporary. It is not: this is the rest of my life.”

5.“I had been transferred to a new city by my job. I was traveling weekly for them, so I didn’t have an office where I could meet people. It was tough, and I started struggling at work, missing deadlines, and not doing as well as I had previously. My parents talked me into scheduling an appointment with a PCP so they could refer me to a therapist…”

A person in a lab coat points to brain scan images on a tablet, highlighting medical analysis

“I picked a doctor online and made an appointment. He was a nice old man on the verge of retirement. He asked me many questions and then said something that was, at the time, pretty confusing. He said he would refer me to a therapist, but in the meantime, he ordered an MRI, just to rule out anything else.

I recall thinking an MRI was pretty silly, but I did it anyway. The MRI showed a large tumor in my brain. I had a craniotomy and proton radiation very quickly. That doctor, in his infinite wisdom, saved my life. My dad later went back to shake his hand and say thank you. When asked what it was that he saw to order the MRI, he said there was something in the way I described myself and what was going on that made him think it was more than depression. I think of him often. I know he could have taken what I was saying at face value and sent me to see a therapist. Instead, he read something in between what I was saying. It’s still a mystery today.”

6.“I was seen for an annual physical this April and talked with my doc about tinnitus and a ‘full feeling’ with altered hearing in my right ear. She had me see an ENT who had an audiogram done. I had what they call an asymmetric hearing loss. They wanted me to see a neurologist, which I did in early June…”

“…He wanted me to have a brain MRI, which I did about two weeks ago. During the interim, I couldn’t stand the suspense, so I went on ‘Dr. Google’ and became convinced I had a benign brain tumor. I don’t blame you if you shake your head or laugh. I had an MRI, and they found that all the functional parts of my hearing were normal. But, the radiologist discovered that I had had an ‘acute lacunar infarct,’ otherwise known as a stroke.

I was shocked because, since age 52 (20 years ago), I had eaten very healthfully, etc. Even though I had a family history, I thought my lifestyle protected me. I saw the neurologist this past Wednesday, and he confirmed the radiologist’s findings. The doctor discovered I had dangerously high blood pressure. I am now on two high-blood pressure meds and a statin. I have three more tests upcoming: an echocardiogram, a CT angiogram, and a 14-day remote heart monitoring. I am so very grateful that the neurologist ordered the brain MRI. Otherwise, I might not have known until I died from a massive stroke or heart attack.”

7.“During the first half of 2022, I noticed that my stomach would get bloated fairly often. It would come and go, so I assumed I might have had a gluten intolerance or something. I also experienced pain from time to time, but I had a gastric bypass in 2006, so it was not uncommon to have stomach pains if I ate too much or something I shouldn’t have. A few months went by, and my distended stomach became an almost daily thing. I looked like I was about seven months pregnant…”

“…I was working an average of 60 hours per week, so it was hard to go to the doctor, but I finally did. My general practitioner took one look at my stomach, and I could see an instant change in her expression. She sent me for an immediate CAT scan and even called when I left her office to make sure I was going for my test. I had the scan and was told the radiologist would review it, and I would hear back in a day or so. Before I even got home from the scan, my doctor called me and told me they had discovered a large mass, and she had made me an appointment with a gynecological oncologist. At my appointment, my surgeon confirmed a large mass on my ovaries and scheduled me for a complete hysterectomy.

He told me there was no way to know if it was malignant until he opened me up. He sent me for the typical pre-surgical blood tests, where my tumor markers came back extremely high. Technically, all that meant was that my body was producing a substance that is found in cancerous tumors. I had surgery where I had an incision from my breast bone to my pubic bone. The mass was so large that he had to make a large incision to minimize the risk of it bursting and spilling any possible cancerous cells into my abdomen.

Surgery was a success, but they found two tumors, an 11-pound one on my right ovary and a two-pound tumor on my left ovary. The first thing I remember after surgery, before I even opened my eyes, was hearing my aunt tell me that it was benign. My recovery was a bit rough, but I thanked god every day that it wasn’t cancer.

As women, we tend to put ourselves and our health on the back burner so we can take care of others. I had almost an entire year of symptoms that I brushed off because I ‘was too busy.’”

8.“At age 34, I was in the best shape of my life: I was an avid gym goer looking good and working hard as new faculty head. I had a great social life with a work-hard, play-hard approach. My big vice was smoking. Having experienced several breast cysts, I was used to checking, so when I felt a bump, I went to GP, who referred me for a routine check…”

“…The consultant had a feel for it and made an ultrasound sound to be on the safe side. Halfway through, the chatty nurse and doctor went silent for just a beat, and I knew something was wrong. They said they needed to try to drain, and if they could not, they would do a biopsy. Breast biopsies aren’t fun, especially with bigger boobs; the consultant then requested a mammogram. Mammograms after a biopsy are even less fun. I knew in my bones by this stage that I was in trouble; I was called back in by a consultant exactly one week later and was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer. Four days later, I was in surgery. It was life-changing, but I’m now 56 and can’t thank the NHS enough.”

9.“In the summer of 2022, I noticed a bump in my neck while shaving. I didn’t think much of it and just monitored the situation. It really wasn’t that noticeable to anyone, but it just felt out of the ordinary. By Christmas of 2022, I started to lose weight, and my friends mentioned it. I arranged an appointment with a doctor, which I’ve probably visited once in 30 years…”

“…I was always healthy and never smoked or took a hard drug in my life. I did like to tip the glass occasionally as my only outlet. I caught Covid in early January, so I didn’t see the doctor until around the 20th. She examined me and sent me off for a scan. After three months of scans, bloodwork, two biopsies, and visiting a few different doctors, it was finally determined that I had three cancerous tumors in my neck, which included one at the base of my tongue and also a spot on my lung. The diagnosis was especially troublesome because they didn’t know if it was two separate cancers: lung cancer that spread to my neck or throat cancer that spread to my lung.

Either way, the outcome did not look bright, and initially, they were going to give me chemo for a while and figured I’d be gone in a year and a half. I then received a call the next day or so, and my oncologist said they could try aggressive radiation and chemo over seven weeks, but it was still a one-in-ten shot I’d survive. I said okay. I had 35 radiation sessions on my neck, 30 on my lung, and six chemo visits to help it along.

Apparently, I was a record breaker for the amount of radiation dosages I was given. I had scans done, which revealed the spots were reducing. I was assured the radiation in my body would continue to work. I was put on immunotherapy as a maintenance routine, which I’ll do every four weeks for a year. I still have three to go. In January of the next year, I had more scans taken, and I was finally clear. I’ve continued to have checkups along the way.

This is terrific news, obviously, but not without side effects. For example, I have a consistent dry mouth because I don’t have enough saliva to break down food when I eat. I have not eaten a regular meal since this medical process began. I basically live on six Ensures a day. Also, I still have depleted energy and strength. There have been a few more setbacks, but I’m doing the best I can right now with a brighter future than before. I’m very thankful to still be here. This is all because of a little bump. Please get checked out if something feels strange to you.”

10.“It was in 2019 after three different antibiotics had failed to fully clear a respiratory infection, I was referred to have a chest X-ray. Nothing I hadn’t had before… I’d only just arrived home afterward when I had a text from the radiography department at the hospital asking me to phone ASAP regarding an X-ray. Long story short, the X-ray had revealed what appeared to be a three-centimeter stellate mass on my right lung…”

A doctor examines chest X-rays on a light board in a dimly lit medical office

“…I needed to have a CT scan. I deferred making an appointment, wanting to speak with my GP first. My husband and I had a holiday booked; I wanted to enjoy that without the pending scan results. My GP told me that I could delay having the scan until after the holiday, but no longer. It seemed more than likely that the ‘mass’ on my lung was a tumor.

I was savvy enough to know that a mass of that size and nature wouldn’t be treatable. So, I talked it over with my husband and son, making it clear that I wouldn’t be accepting any chemotherapy were it to be offered. During our holiday, I pushed myself to achieve things that I’d been putting off for reasons of other health issues. As it turned out, the CT scan revealed that the ‘mass’ was, in fact, an extensive area of infection — which had already begun to lessen in volume since the X-ray revealed its presence. Thank goodness.”

11.“I went to the ER with symptoms I believed were cardiac in nature. As a nurse, I knew that heart attacks in women do not always present with the classic signs. I was very lightheaded and short of breath, but I had no chest pain. All the heart markers were negative. I was feeling pretty good, just resting on the stretcher. That was until the doctor came in, pulled the stool up close to me, and put his hand over mine. Oh, fuck, I think. It turns out I had acute leukemia. Boy, did things start happening fast! I didn’t get home for 104 days. Eventually, I had a stem cell transplant, and here I am around seven years later, telling my story.”

    —Loraine H.

12.“I spoke to my GP a few years ago bout ongoing heartburn, even though I take an acid suppressant medication. She suggested blood tests at first. Those showed raised red platelets, and with a family history of gastric cancers, she referred me for an endoscopy at the local hospital. From there on, it was a round of tests and scans, a biopsy, and a three-week wait for results. Six weeks after the initial doctor appointment, I was told (over the phone) that I have stage three non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It is incurable. I have it for the rest of my life, and I still haven’t fully wrapped my head around this fact.”

13.“I was being treated for 24/7 headaches with medications that caused me to be extremely thirsty. My doctor told me that I had low calcium and told me to take tablets and consume more foods containing calcium. Being the ‘smart’ person that I am, I decided to move to calcium-rich foods to quench my thirst. I drank one to two quarts of milk daily and calcium-fortified orange juice. I took TUMS for heartburn and ate ice cream, cottage cheese, and other foods that would boost my calcium levels. I began feeling sicker and sicker…”

“I asked my doctor to check my blood because I felt like I was dying. He poo-pooed me and said I was fine. My brain felt foggy, I had increased difficulty staying awake, and I was feeling weaker and weaker. I drove out to see my sister. Friends had to drive my car for the last leg of the journey. God only knows how I managed to drive the first 500 miles. I had nearly fallen asleep at the wheel numerous times and had pulled over to sleep too many times to count.

I had an appointment with my family doctor for my annual physical. By that time, I required a walker to get anywhere as I was unsteady on my feet. A few hours after I saw the doctor, I got an urgent call. ‘Get into the hospital, STAT! You are in kidney failure!’ I had Milk-alkali syndrome, which means too much calcium in my diet had damaged my kidneys. I was hospitalized for five days, and it took more than a year for my kidneys to recover. I was lucky. There was no permanent damage. Had my first doctor listened to me, the kidney failure would have been discovered in the very early stages.”

14.“At age 60, I felt run down and tired for a while, attributing it to age and insufficient exercise. I decided to check my blood pressure at home, and it was quite high despite the blood pressure medication I was taking, so I called my doctor’s office…”

Person sitting in a chair, using a smartphone, with a blood pressure monitor on their arm

“…They were concerned and told me to come into the office right away. My BP was still high in the doctor’s office, so my doctor sent me to the lab for a lot of blood work. That afternoon, I started getting texts with some of the results of the lab work, and I saw that I was anemic. Well, that explained a lot, and I figured I would need iron supplements. The following day, my doctor called me first thing.

She told me that she was admitting me to the hospital to fully diagnose what was going on with me. I was scared. Once in the hospital, I learned that I had kidney disease and was in kidney failure. I never saw that coming! I had to begin dialysis immediately, which made me ill and caused low blood pressure. I was on dialysis for seven months, with five months of home hemodialysis.

I felt ill and was exhausted all the time, with little appetite and unable to return to work. Both of my adult children offered to be tested to be living donors. My son was tested first (as he lives in the same city I do) and he was a match. I was extremely fortunate for this. My son truly saved my life, and I will forever be grateful for his sacrifice. My new kidney is working well, and my son is doing well too.”

15.“I went to my optometrist in March 2022 to get new glasses. I had a bit of blurred vision and thought I needed my prescription adjusted. My optometrist did a dilated exam and found I have ocular melanoma. A very rare and often deadly cancer. I had plaque radiation in April after the diagnosis was confirmed by an ocular oncologist. Who knew there even was such a thing? Now, I am under surveillance for metastasis as the genetic testing done on the tumor showed a 72% chance of metastasis within five years. There is no cure for metastasis, and you usually have less than six months unless it is found early enough to be surgically removed or have embolization.”

16.“My father-in-law went to the doctor for some mild chest pains, and to be tested as quickly as possible, the doctor sent him to the emergency room…”

“…It was for the best because while he felt fine, this turned into a cascade of increasingly worse diagnoses with each doctor he saw. He didn’t leave the hospital until he’d had an entire quadruple bypass surgery! He was only 60, physically fit, and youthful, but was 75% blocked up. He came out as the youngest bypass patient in the hospital but with a new lease on life and, a few months later, joined the rest of our family on a three-day trek through mountains where we topped out at about 15,000 feet above sea level, followed by a casual climb of another entire mountain on the spur of the moment. All because he thought he would probably be out of the doctor’s office after an hour!”

    —Anne R.

17.“I had a sudden onset of debilitating headaches. I didn’t have any headaches until then, and I was barely functioning during an intense episode, so I went to my primary doctor. I’m grateful they took my concern seriously and ordered a CT scan. Before heading to the scan, the doctor said, ‘I know most people worry about a brain tumor, but this is probably nothing.’ While it was abnormal for me, I wasn’t considering a brain tumor. It was indeed a brain tumor. The surgeon said my headaches weren’t related, but my headaches have drastically improved since my craniotomy. I’m so grateful.”

18.“A week before lockdown in March 2020, I went for a scan after having a cough for weeks, and it was discovered that I had large tumors in both kidneys. Clear cell carcinomas. After a partial nephrectomy on the right kidney and a complete nephrectomy on the left, I thought the worst was over; unfortunately, at a follow-up this March, it was found to have already spread to my lymph nodes and lungs, so now I am undergoing targeted treatment in the hope of delaying the inevitable. With an expected life expectancy of 22 months, I am keeping everything crossed that I will be the exception to the facts 🤞.”

We have entered holiday baking season, and at 4.5 quarts, this top-seller can hold enough dough to make up to eight dozen cookies at a time (though it won’t take up much room in your kitchen). Sure, it’s insulated with an eco-friendly filling, but the real stars of the show are the carbon fiber heating elements sandwiched inside of its wind- and water-resistant shell. These create four heating zones — in the left and right front areas, the upper back and the collar — that evenly spread warmth throughout the vest. Even celebs like Reba McEntire are big fans.

One reason Martha Stewart looks incredible at 83? Decades of facials at Mario Badescu’s skin care salon. In fact, her facialist shared the star’s go-tos, and one major step in her routine is this very mask. Stewart’s facialist, Carmela Barabas, shared why she trusts this product on the icon’s near-perfect skin with Vogue UK: “[It] restores skin texture and skin elasticity.” It contains ingredients like collagen and kaolin clay to help draw out oil and impurities from pores for smoother, more youthful-looking skin.
