  • The Warriors’ biggest strength and weakness are ‘almost the same thing’

ONCE THE TEAM’S charter plane reached cruising altitude, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr and his staff huddled together in the coaches’ section located in the middle of the plane.

Somewhere between the Phoenix desert and Denver’s Rocky Mountains on Monday afternoon, Kerr and his lieutenants crunched numbers, dissected combinations and settled on some lineup changes.

But then Kerr got word that Draymond Green was going to be out for Tuesday’s game against the Denver Nuggets, just the latest jolt of turbulence to hit the slumping Warriors.

“We made some decisions on the plane that went out the window with Draymond’s absence,” Kerr lamented.

After starting the season 12-3 and looking like they were in cruise control with blowout wins in five of their first six victories, the Warriors suddenly dropped into a five-game losing slide before a much-needed win over the Houston Rockets on Thursday without Green and Stephen Curry.

Until Thursday, Golden State had been unable to hold onto double-digit second-half leads, squandering a 17-point lead to the San Antonio Spurs, an 18-point lead to the Brooklyn Nets and an 11-point lead to the Nuggets. The Warriors also had to play two games without Curry and two games without Green due to injuries in their past four games.

Two weeks ago, the Warriors were in sole possession of first place in the West. On Friday, they head into the first of consecutive meetings against the Minnesota Timberwolves (10 p.m. ET, ESPN) stuck in the Western Conference top 10.

What had been a masterfully orchestrated 11-to-12-man rotation morphed into a 13-man log jam in Saturday’s loss to the Phoenix Suns. Kerr was left searching for any slump-busting lineups he could find, and wondered whether it was time to think about shortening his rotation.

After using a 10-man rotation for the second straight game, the Warriors finally snapped the slide.

“With everybody healthy, the strength of the team is the depth,” Kerr said before facing Houston on Thursday. “Hopefully we’ll prove this without Steph and Draymond — I think we’ll be able to get through stretches of injuries because we have so much depth on our roster.

“[But] I think [our] weakness is almost the same thing. There’s very little clarity for me and the staff as to who we should play every night down the stretch. We probably have had different lineups closing the game for the last five games. So good and bad with that. But it does help when you get some separation and you know for sure kind of who your group is. We’re not sure what that means yet.”

AS THE FINAL BUZZER blared in Denver after the Warriors fumbled an 11-point lead in the final 6:13, the typically calm Kerr was shouting expletives at Tyler Ford’s crew, who he believed missed Christian Braun signaling for a timeout after securing a loose ball with 1.9 seconds left, despite the Nuggets having no timeouts.

But that’s not the only thing that has upset the zen of one of Phil Jackson’s most successful disciples. For the first time during the losing streak, Kerr let his frustrations show as the Warriors failed to close out another game, falling to 5-6 in clutch-time games this season. He loved the effort, but not the turnovers in the third quarter or the number of fouls.

So the championship coach did something he rarely does in his postgame news conference — he criticized one of his favorite players, Brandin Podziemski. While Kerr told Podziemski all of this privately, the coach let it be known publicly that the second-year guard drew his ire over two poor turnovers, one of which was a lob attempt on a fast break in traffic that Kerr described as “frankly insane” and a couple of fouls on shooters, including one that gave Michael Porter Jr. three foul shots.

“Pod’s a hell of a player,” Kerr said after the loss. “But he needs to be a smart player.”

Kerr said he sees his players trying too hard sometimes. Not even Curry has been immune. Dealing with bilateral pain in his knees — a condition he admits is new and has kept him out of two of the past four games as the Warriors manage his health — the superstar missed a wide open left-handed driving layup at one point in Denver before finishing with 24 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds.

“I’m not going to try to find positives,” Curry said after the loss at Denver. “We’re all playing hard and all committed to trying to get out of this hole. We have a lot of great guys in the locker room. We have a lot of positive vibes, but nobody wants to sit and find positives [in the middle of] a losing streak.

“It’s kind of just find a way to claw your way out. … We got to win.”

A major part of the Warriors’ identity in their championship years, and this season, has been one of their mottos: Strength in numbers. Kerr has called this roster perhaps his deepest yet.

Kerr has used Curry, Green, Andrew Wiggins, Podziemski, Jonathan Kuminga, Buddy Hield, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Kevon Looney, Kyle Anderson, Moses Moody, Gary Payton II and Lindy Waters III 12 minutes or more per game.

The Warriors have 12 players — excluding De’Anthony Melton, who was lost for the season with a left ACL tear on Nov. 12 — who average 10 or more minutes this season and qualify for the minutes-per-game leaderboard. That would be tied for the most qualified players to average 10-plus minutes in a season since minutes were first tracked in 1951-52, according to ESPN Research.

This season, there are 10 instances of a team playing at least 12 players for 10 or more minutes each. The Warriors account for half of those games.

Championship teams like the 2001-02 Lakers and 2013-14 Spurs utilized 12-man rotations. So did the 2012-13 Spurs team that lost in the Finals.

But 21 games into the season, Kerr is still trying to piece his 12-man puzzle together. His most used lineup is Curry, Green, Wiggins, Waters and Jackson-Davis, which is a plus-14 over 71 minutes together, according to ESPN Research. With Melton out for the season, Kerr has found success when Curry, Green, Wiggins and Hield share the floor. The four are plus-52.

The other thing the Warriors can use is a hot Hield. One of the team’s key offseason acquisitions, Hield scored 20 or more points in six of his first seven games — all wins. He looked like the perfect replacement for Klay Thompson.

But after scoring 20 in a win at Washington on Nov. 4, Hield did not reach 20 points in the next 14 games. He logged 16 minutes in two losses during the losing streak, his fewest minutes in a game since playing 14 minutes in the season-opening 36-point win over Portland.

Kuminga and Moody, two key players for the Warriors’ future, have had to be patient at times with their minutes. During a four-game stretch in mid-November before Kuminga missed two games due to illness, the forward played fewer than 20 minutes in three consecutive games. The Warriors, though, went 3-1 during that four-game stretch.

But Kuminga’s patience paid off this week. He played 29 minutes and a season-high 33 minutes, respectively, in the past two games. With Curry and Green out on Thursday, Kuminga had one of his best games, scoring a career-high 33 points, 14 coming in the fourth quarter. Kuminga delivered when the Warriors needed big baskets, scoring five of the points in the final 1:04 of a tight game.

Kerr has said he has to find a way to get Kuminga more minutes, while also having to play Green and Looney.

But the common thread is Curry, Green and Wiggins at the center of the lineup. The trio is a plus-89 in lineups on the floor this season. That is the best plus-minus for any Warriors trio this season.

“Anytime you’re losing, you need to figure something out,” Green said after the Thunder beat the Warriors 105-101 in San Francisco when Curry was out with pain in his knees on Nov. 27. “I don’t think it’s a matter of something’s been lost. We know what our identity is as a team and you have to stay as close to that as possible throughout the course of an 82-game season.

“You’re going to hit rough patches. … Nobody’s panicking.”

EARLIER THIS SEASON, a friend texted Kerr after he saw how the coach was playing a 12-man rotation.

“Hey, 12 guys, it’s a real democracy,” the friend texted.

“As soon as we lose, it’s going to be communism,” Kerr texted back.

As he was searching for any combinations he could find to help break the losing streak in Phoenix, Kerr ended up playing so many players, he lost count and initially thought he played 14 against old friend Kevin Durant and the Suns.

It probably felt that way because Kerr used all 13 players available to him that night. He started Curry, Podziemski, Wiggins, Green and Jackson-Davis. And he subbed in Kuminga, Hield, Looney, Payton, Anderson, Moody, Waters and two-way player Pat Spencer, who logged eight minutes, four coming in the fourth quarter as Kerr looked for a spark.

Curry even noted how unique it is to play so many guys.

“We’ve come in with the strength in numbers philosophy and you want it to work and you want it to prove itself correct,” Curry said. “The only thing I’ll say is it is hard for anybody to know or try to get a rhythm and know what you’re going to be asked to do [with so many playing]. … We are a unique team.

“Do we need to shorten it? We probably need to be a little bit more predictable on a night-to-night basis so guys can get a little bit of a rhythm that shortening one or two guys maybe.”

This depth, however, has allowed Kerr to keep Curry’s minutes down to 30.2 per game — his fewest in a season outside of 2011-12 and 2019-20, when he played a total of 26 and five games, respectively, because of injuries. Green’s average minutes are at 28.5.

Kerr has made it clear that he and the training staff will have to ensure they keep Curry and Green healthy and fresh.

The deep rotation of fresh bodies also has allowed new defensive coordinator Jerry Stackhouse to blitz and double-team more. While the defense has struggled in fourth quarters during the losing streak, Stackhouse says whatever wrinkles opponents are successfully throwing at the Warriors defense are something they can study now and improve on for later in the season.

“We know that it’s a long season,” Stackhouse told ESPN on Sunday. “We’re not discouraged about what has happened yet. Obviously it sucks, the San Antonio game, the Brooklyn game felt like those were winnable games for us. Maybe one thing here or there and we’re feeling a lot better than we’re feeling right now. But you got to feel the sting of losing [these consecutive games].”

In Denver, Kerr played just 10 Warriors for the first time this season, leaving Waters, Spencer and Gui Santos on his bench while Green sat out due to left calf tightness. Kerr stuck with 10 again on Thursday — Waters and Santos sat — and the group rewarded him with the streak-busting win despite his stars sitting out. Kerr said the plan is for Curry to return against Minnesota on Friday. And he said it’s possible Green could be back as well.

He needs his “stabilizing forces” back. Golden State is in a treacherous stretch that includes games against Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Denver, Houston, Minnesota and Memphis. And that doesn’t include the NBA Cup quarterfinal match against the Rockets on Wednesday, which would send them to Las Vegas for the semis if they win.

Kerr would love to get back to playing 11 or 12 players. But first, he has to get the Warriors back to safe cruising altitude again.

“I just feel like as a coach, you kind of know your team and where the vibe is and are you competing?” Kerr said before facing Houston. “Are the guys supporting each other? And the answer to that is yes, unequivocally, with our group. While we’ve hit this little stretch where we’ve lost games, we’re playing hard, we’re competing, we’ve given ourselves a chance to win. We just haven’t closed, so we got to get better with closing.

“But big picture-wise, I love this team. I feel good about where we are.”

  • 8 Food and Nutrition Trends for 2025, Predicted By The Experts

    2025 food trends | MyFitnessPal

Food trends are constantly evolving, influenced by everything from new scientific research to cultural shifts.

Looking ahead to 2025, it’s clear that food and nutrition are becoming more personalized and health-focused than ever.

But which trends will shape our plates (and health) next year?

To answer that, we’ve consulted top dietitians and industry experts who live and breathe nutrition.

Here’s what you need to know about the food and nutrition trends expected to dominate 2025.

    Food Trend 1: High-Fiber Diets

Are you getting enough fiber?  If not, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, only about 5% of Americans consume the recommended daily fiber intake (1).  But that may soon start to change.

In 2024, the International Food Information Council’s (IFIC) annual Food and Health Survey found that 64% of respondents actively try to eat fiber (2). And, over 90% aim to get it from food (2).

    Why It Will Trend:

Dr. Danielle Belardo, a preventive cardiologist in California and scientific advisor for MyFitnessPal, says high-fiber diets are on the rise. She expects even more people to prioritize fiber-rich meals in 2025.

A high-fiber diet features foods rich in dietary fiber, such as:

    • fruits
    • vegetables
    • whole grains
    • legumes
    • nuts and seeds.

These foods support digestive health and promote overall well-being (3).

In fact, “increasing evidence highlights how high-fiber diets can lower cholesterol, reduce risks of heart disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers,” Belardo says (20).

She explains that “as this awareness grows, people are focusing on fiber to support long-term health.”

    What to Know:

If you’re looking to increase your fiber intake, Belardo recommends you do so gradually to avoid digestive discomfort.

She suggests tracking your intake with MyFitnessPal’s app. Then, if you’re not meeting daily goals, slowly increase fiber by about 3 grams per day or week, depending on your tolerance.

Instead of relying on fiber supplements, consider including fiber-rich foods in each meal and snack.

For example, try a high-fiber make-ahead breakfast, like chia pudding, a fiber-rich soup for lunch, and a dinner that includes legumes, roasted vegetables, or whole grains.

And don’t forget, “hydration is key as you increase fiber to support digestion,” Belardo highlighted.

You can track your fluid intake in the MyFitnessPal app, too, making sure you hit your daily goals.

    Food Trend 2: Plant-Based Proteins

Move over animal protein—plants are proving they’ve got what it takes. Staples like lentils, tofu, and quinoa may dominate next year’s menus.

Only 3% of respondents identified as “plant-based” in the 2024 IFIC survey (2). But plant-based eating patterns like the Mediterranean, DASH, flexitarian, vegetarian, and vegan made up another 18% (2). These healthy diets are likely to continue to trend in 2025.

    Why It Will Trend:

Belardo noted that people are discovering the many plant protein sources, including:

    • legumes (like beans, lentils, and peas)
    • soybean products (like tofu, tempeh, and soy milk)
    • nuts and seeds
    • whole grains (like quinoa, brown rice, and oats)
    • seitan (made from wheat gluten)
    • legume-based pastas
    • nuts
    • seeds
    • textured vegetable protein
    • and vegetables

“With growing interest in sustainable eating, the environment, and plant-based health benefits, people are realizing that they can meet their protein needs without animal products,” she says.

    What to Know:

Belardo dispelled the long-standing myth that plant-based proteins must be combined to be effective (4).

In reality, “there’s no need to worry about pairing proteins,” she says.

Instead, she explains that “eating a variety of healthful plant protein sources over the day can provide all essential amino acids, and focusing on variety naturally covers protein needs without special planning.”

If you’re worried about your protein intake from plant-based foods, track your daily protein with the MyFitnessPal app. You can also use it to check which foods are the best plant protein sources and be more mindful about regularly incorporating them into your diet.

    Food Trend 3: Affordable Nutrition

With grocery prices expected to rise, though more slowly, in 2025, there’s a growing focus on eating well without breaking the bank (5).

The 2024 IFIC survey found that, after taste, price was the second most important factor for 76% of consumers when buying food and drinks (2).

    Why It Will Trend:

Erin Palinski-Wade, a dietitian and scientific advisor for MyFitnessPal, believes that “as food costs continue to skyrocket, the average consumer may struggle to purchase a variety of nutrient-dense foods.”

So, she expects “an increase in consumers looking for budget-friendly foods that provide the most nutrition for the least amount of money (the best bang for their nutrition buck).”

Palinkski-Wade says this may lead to a rise in the purchasing of budget-friendly foods such as:

    • Legumes like beans and lentils
    • Frozen and canned produce
    • Canned lean protein such as tuna and sardines

She also suggests we’ll see a rise in recipes highlighting both nutrition and cost per serving.

    What to Know:

Palinski-Wade empathizes with consumers, noting, “it can feel incredibly challenging to afford nutrient-dense foods for your entire family.”

To help offset rising food costs, she recommends:

    • Minimizing food waste
    • Shopping for in-season local produce
    • Buying food in bulk

Canned and frozen foods are often cheaper and as nutritious as fresh options. But sometimes fresh foods like whole carrots or potatoes can be more affordable (6, 7). So, don’t assume fresh produce is always out of reach for budget-friendly options.

Cooking at home, rather than dining out, is also a cost-effective way to ensure you are getting the most nutrition for your money (5).

By meal prepping and planning ahead, you can save time and money on food expenses throughout the week.

Food Trend 4: GLP-1 Friendly Foods

GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide (Ozempic), used for managing diabetes and weight loss, are increasing in popularity (8). These medications slow the digestive process, promote satiety, and decrease appetite (9).

    Why It Will Trend:

“As more people use these medications, changes in appetite, portion size, and metabolism will lead to a need to make dietary adjustments,” says Palinski-Wade.

She expects a higher priority on foods that are best for GLP-1 users.

Generally, she says these are foods that can maximize nutrition in smaller quantities, such as:

    • Quality protein sources
    • Antioxidant-rich foods
    • Fiber-rich foods

“More attention will be spent on educating GLP-1 users of the need for balanced nutrition to prevent nutrient deficiencies and a negative impact on bone health and metabolism,” she noted.

As part of this trend, Palinski-Wade also predicts “an increased demand for vitamin and nutrition supplements to support GLP-1 medications.”

    What to Know:

“GLP-1 medications can be a wonderful tool to treat conditions from obesity to diabetes, but they are not without risk,” Palinski-Wade cautioned.

She highlighted the need to carefully balance nutrition while using these medications. This may help minimize side effects and have impacts on metabolism, bone density, and overall nutritional status.

The MyFitnessPal app can support your GLP-1 journey in many ways, including helping you track your intake of essential vitamins and minerals.

Additionally, MyFitnessPal offers a free GLP-1 nutrition plan in the app. Our scientific advisors, including Erin Palinski-Wade and Maya Feller, helped create it.

Food Trend 5: Continued Focus on Protein

A high-protein diet stresses eating protein-rich foods. This diet is favored among athletes, those aiming to lose weight, and older adults preserving muscle mass.

High-protein diets have surged in popularity in recent years and were identified as the most commonly followed diet (20%) in the 2024 IFIC survey (2).

They are widely recognized for their role in promoting satiety and supporting metabolic health.

    Why It Will Trend:

Maya Feller, MS, RD, CDN is a registered dietitian in New York and scientific advisor for MyFitnessPal. She expects “an explosion of high-protein snack foods” and more marketing of high-protein whole foods and ingredients in 2025.

She suspects this trend might be tied to the global increase in the use of weight loss medications like GLP-1s.

“For many, these cause rapid weight loss, and with rapid weight loss comes rapid loss of lean muscle mass,” she explains.

So, Feller says, “a pattern of eating that is rich in protein becomes increasingly important as a tool to minimize the loss of lean muscle mass.”

    What to Know:

For those losing weight through diet and exercise, a higher protein intake may be beneficial. It may help maintain muscle while promoting healthy weight loss (10).

But, “people should be aware that protein needs should be individualized,” Feller emphasized.

“For example,” she says, “the baseline recommendation is .8 grams per kilogram of body weight for the average well person.” This is the minimum amount of protein needed to prevent muscle loss.

For athletes and those focused on weight loss, it’s recommended to consume about 1.2 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight (11).

However, our body can only absorb so much protein, and Feller cautioned against consuming too much protein.

Additionally, the best carb-protein-fat ratios for weight loss and muscle gain are still being debated. They may differ based on individual goals and needs.

For inspiration on starting a high-protein diet, try MyFitnessPal’s free high-protein diet plan in the app.

    Food Trend 6: Personalized Nutrition

Digital health tech, especially AI-based wearables and real-time metabolic trackers like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), are becoming more mainstream (12).

These tools enable the monitoring and tracking of individual diets and responses to food, paving the way for highly customized nutrition plans.

    Why It Will Trend:

Feller explains, “We finally know that one size does not fit all, so the public is looking for ways to harness their own knowledge and apply it to their health. Enter trackers. “

“The desire to utilize everything from food logs to wearables that provide real-time data about heart rate variability, sleep patterns, blood sugar, and metabolism will boom,” she continued.

She thinks that people crave health insights and want greater control over their health outcomes.

“Many of my patients are tired of a healthcare system that does not look at them as individuals, but rather as cogs in a system,” Feller stated.

    What to Know:

Feller says that “tracking and wearables are fantastic tools that can provide real-time data and deepen knowledge.”

She noted that this info can help be shared with a health provider to find patterns and make custom recommendations.

But, the data is only as good as what you do with it. It’s important to act on the data collected, working with your health care provider. Use it to improve your nutrition and health, not just track it.

For example, if your CGM shows consistently high blood sugar levels after eating certain foods, it may be time to adjust your diet.

Feller encourages “everyone to become familiar with their own body and its needs and use the findings to advocate for what they need in healthcare situations.”

    Food Trend 7: Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and fasting. Among the most common methods is 16:8, which involves fasting for 16 hours overnight and eating during an 8-hour window.

In the IFIC survey, intermittent fasting rose in popularity from 12% in 2023 to 13% in 2024 popularity (2, 13).

This makes it one of the most popular diets in the United States, and I predict it will continue to be a mega-trend in 2025.

    Why It Will Trend:

Intermittent fasting has been the focus of hundreds of studies. It has gained attention for its potential benefits beyond weight loss.

Research suggests intermittent fasting may benefit adults with overweight or obesity. It may help reduce waist size and body fat, improve cholesterol, blood pressure, and insulin levels, and support lean body mass (14).

The exact mechanisms are uncertain. But, these benefits may stem from fasting’s ability to stimulate autophagy, the body’s natural cellular repair process (15). Fasting may also positively influence the gut microbiome (16).

Fasting has also been part of cultural and religious practices for centuries (17).

    What to Know:

There are several methods of intermittent fasting to choose from, so it’s important to find the best fasting window for you.

With the rise of technology, mobile apps and online communities have made it even easier for individuals to stick to their intermittent fasting plans.

The MyFitnessPal app, for example, features an intermittent fasting tracker that allows you to set your fasting windows and track your daily progress.

As always, consult a health professional before starting a fasting regimen if you have health conditions, take medications with food, or have any history of disordered eating.

Food Trend 8: Eating for a Healthy Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome comprises trillions of tiny organisms like bacteria and fungi.

As science advances and interest in holistic health grows, I predict that, in 2025, eating for a healthy gut microbiome will be a key nutrition trend.

    Why it Will Trend:

Caring for our gut’s living community has benefits beyond digestion. It is reshaping our understanding of health and disease.

Researchers are deeply focused on this area of study. They are finding new links between our gut microbiome and our well-being (18), including:

    • Mental health
    • Immunity
    • Inflammation
    • Chronic disease
    • Body weight

We’ve already seen this trend taking shape in recent years, with the market flooded with probiotic foods and drinks, like fiber-enriched sodas, touting gut health benefits.

    What to Know:

The type, variety, and quality of the food we eat play a big role in shaping our gut microbiome (19).

For example, studies suggest that eating protein may improve the variety of gut bacteria, often a sign of a healthy microbiome (19). On the other hand, high-fat diets may reduce healthy bacteria (19).

So, understanding how diet affects gut bacteria is important for our well-being.

While research on the gut microbiome is still emerging, here are key tips to keep in mind for a healthy gut microbiome:

    • Consume a diverse range of fiber-rich, plant-based foods
    • Enjoy fermented foods like unsweetened yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut
    • Eat prebiotic-rich foods like garlic, onions, and bananas
    • Limit or avoid alcohol consumption
    • Limit or avoid highly processed and sugary foods

    Looking Ahead

The eight nutrition trends outlined above highlight the growing intersection of science, wellness, and mindful eating in shaping our future health.

Not all nutrition trends are healthy, especially when they’re coming from social media influences. But, following upcoming focus areas from qualified experts is usually a safe bet.

These nutrition trends, such as prioritizing gut health, increasing fiber and protein intake, or using new technologies, can be beneficial.

Staying informed about these and other health-promoting practices can empower you to make healthy and impactful choices in the new year.

  • Surgeons Are Sharing Their Wildest “Oh, Crap!” Moments From The Job, And I’m Too Stunned To Speak

We’ve all had things go wrong at work. No matter what industry you work in or what title you have, we’ve all experienced our fair share of “oh crap” moments.

Person in a black outfit dramatically rolls eyes and spins away on a concrete background

Luckily, most of us aren’t doing open heart surgery, so the stakes aren’t as high.

Man in a suit speaking on the phone says, "I've made a huge mistake," with a concerned expression

Although, that may make you wonder…do surgeons ever have those panic-inducing moments on the job?

Cartoon character with an anesthesia mask says, "Uh-oh, this isn't anesthetic. It's new car smell."

Well, the answer is yes, and the evidence is right here in this Reddit thread. Dozens of medical professionals shared stories about their “oh crap moments,” and it might have you lost for words:

1.“I was doing a corneal transplant when I had the ‘oh shit’ moment. During surgery, I cut off the patient’s own cornea and replaced it with a new donor cornea. During that moment when the host cornea was off, but before I could get the new one on, there was literally nothing on the front of the eye except a tear film and aqueous humor. Anyway, the patient takes that moment to start vomiting.”

“The reason we tell everyone to skip food and drink is so they don’t aspirate in case they throw up. This patient lied about eating breakfast and started throwing up everything. The eye is still an ‘open sky’ at this time. Everything inside of the eye can now become outside of the eye. And she’s bucking and vomiting.

Those not in the know will say this is not good. Those really in the know will say, ‘Oh shit.’

Anyway, I had to grab the new cornea and start stitching as fast as I could on a patient actively throwing up. I use 10-0 nylon sutures which are thinner than an eyelash. It turned out okay but not great.

Don’t lie about eating breakfast before surgery, folks.”

2.“The oh shit I’ve seen was stuff during transplants.”

Surgeons in operating room performing surgery under bright surgical lights, wearing masks and green scrubs, focused on the procedure

“There are these things called lifeports that are used for kidneys; they allow fluid to circulate during transport from the donor to the recipient. One surgeon I was working with dropped a kidney inside the lifeport on the ground and it cracked and skidded along the ground. The kidney was ok, though. Another surgeon just couldn’t get it to open and was getting frustrated and asked for a mallet: he was going to bash it to try to open it.”

3.“When I was a new RN working the ICU in a large teaching hospital, I came into work one morning to a patient that was admitted that night, intubated (breathing tube in), sedated, Foley catheter (tube in pee pee hole) and all. Long story short, he was extubated (breathing tube out) that same shift and was completely alert and oriented.”

“Now, the catheter bag had been empty my whole shift, which is norma,l seeing as how he didn’t make urine anymore, and this hospital had a nurse-driven Foley removal policy, meaning while we needed a doctor’s order to insert one, we could remove one at our discretion unless a doctor specifically put in orders not to. This patient had no such doctor’s order, so I went to remove the catheter. They are held in the bladder by a balloon on the end that is inflated with 10ml of saline. I deinflated the balloon removing 10ml of saline, and pulled it out.

As soon as the catheter left his penis, blood started pouring out in a heavy stream. Turns out the nurse who placed it on admission hadn’t advanced it far enough since there was no urine production to indicate correct placement and had inflated the balloon while still in his urethra, causing trauma.

It would not stop bleeding. I had to hold this man’s penis ‘shut’ to put pressure on it while my coworker paged the resident who came and looked at me with pity as he told me to just keep holding this 30-something-year-old man’s penis In my hands to staunch the blood flow until urology could get there to assess. It just kept gushing blood every time I eased up to check. For over an hour total I held this mans penis and tried to make polite conversation until the urologist arrived.”

4.“Not a surgeon, but was working in obstetric theatre in the UK mid-heatwave last year. This is important as maternity wards are kept quite warm as newborn babies aren’t good at regulating their temperatures. Combine this with a heatwave and the fact that in Britain, we’re not exactly used to high temperatures, and we have the perfect storm.”

“Mid-emergency cesarean, the scrub nurse assisting the op starts feeling faint. This is unusual as this scrub nurse worked in these theatres full time so this was her bread and butter, so I can only conclude it was the heat. She has to step out, so the SHO takes her place, assisting the obs registrar with the section. This SHO looked extremely junior, as in the first C-section ever. And they were trying to assist with the instruments in the uterus when they fainted. I had to jump in and grab the back of their theatre gown to stop them from faceplanting the open uterus, and then sort of gently tug backward to let them fall into me when someone else took over assisting.

This SHO was not exactly small. Thank God the baby was already out.”

5.“Fifth-year resident here. There are lots of bad ‘Oh shit’ moments throughout training, such as necrotizing soft tissue infections or takebacks for bad complications or deaths during cases. However, I’d like to share a recent positive ‘Oh shit’ moment.”

“15cm kidney tumor with thrombus into the vena cava. Big incision, great exposure of the vasculature and the tumor. My attending and I are dancing around the aorta and vena cava. We are able to feel the tumor thrombus in the IVC. I was expecting that we’d need to cut and clamp the vena cava to get all the cancer out. But my attending literally squeezes the tumor out of the vena cava back into the renal vein and then has me tie the renal vein off so the tumor doesn’t slip back into the vena cava.

Patient went home in like 4 days, margins were negative, and is still doing great.

The first time I felt like, ‘Oh shit. I’m a surgeon.’”

6.“Surgeon here. I’ve dealt with loads of morbid stuff, but one thing that made me stop and go ‘oh shit’ was a conversation with a young patient who had a perforated colon from diverticular disease, which is a common wear and tear of the colon.”

Surgeons wearing scrubs and masks perform a medical procedure in an operating room

“He was one of youngest patients I had seen with this condition and certainly the youngest with a perforation so bad as to require an operation. When I was counseling him on the operation, which involves removing the perforated part of the colon and giving him a colostomy, he told me his biggest concern was how he was going to have anal sex with his same-sex partner. He would only have a small stump of rectum left inside, which would be at risk of perforation with any force applied to it.

It made me really think about the implications of the surgery we do. The operation is the easy part!”

    7.“I was the patient.”

“I had a liver transplant and was having an ERCP done to place a new bile duct stent. Well, apparently, my anatomy is different than normal, and my lungs go more down my sides. So he accidentally caused a nick, which caused a hemothorax. So when I woke up I couldn’t breathe, they did an x-ray and had to do a chest tube. Eventually, I was so exhausted I asked to be vented, so he vented me. Apparently, he cried. He felt so bad about it all.

But it wasn’t him being malicious or negligent; it was simply an accident.”—greffedufois

8.“Not a surgeon, thought I’d share this though.”

“Husband went in for a routine colonoscopy, and as they were prepping him, anesthetist asks him if he’s a ginger. My husband tells him yeah. When he was a kid growing up, he had fire-engine red hair, though it’s faded to a more strawberry blonde now. The anesthetist laughs and says, okay, I gotcha, we’ll give you the redhead dosage and winks.

Well, my husband thinks it’s funny until he wakes up at the tail end of the procedure (pun intended), and doctors are just chattin’ it up, and what have you. Turns out it’s not a joke and redheads have some type of natural block to anesthesia. The dude had given him the allowable dosage, and he still woke up.

Happened a couple of years later. They gave him ketamine and some other shit to knock him out to get wisdom teeth out when he told the dentist about the colonoscopy thing. He still woke up at the end of that one, too.”–Berty_Qwerty

9.“My grandfather told a story about a clamp coming off an artery while he was pulling a kidney in rural Wyoming in the early 50s.”

“The abdominal cavity was quickly filling with blood, and the nurse fainted. He was able to push down with his elbow on the descending aorta and got the clamp back on. The patient lived, but I think he chose his surgical assistants a little more carefully after that.”

10.“Not a surgeon. I’m a hospitalist physician. Happened at my hospital- a mentally ill young woman, who was pregnant at the time, was in denial, locked herself into her room when she realized the contractions were coming.”

“She basically didn’t push, and the baby didn’t come naturally. Her family called 911 because of the smell. The ER realized her baby had died inside her and was basically rotting due to the smell. She was taken to the OR to remove the baby, and apparently, all the nurses and surgeons were vomiting because once they opened her up, the smell was overpowering, and it was traumatizing to see a rotting baby.”

    TheSunscreenLife

11.“I work in cardiovascular, and I can think of a couple. Over my 8-year career, I’ve had three patients start moving their arms in the middle of open heart surgery; one of them even tried to sit up (the surgeon was pushing the patients’ shoulders down and yelling to anesthesia to ‘give the patient something’).”

Surgeons and medical staff perform surgery in an operating room with overhead lights

12.“Not me, but my uncle—he’s a respirologist and was supervising/sitting in on lung surgery to remove a tumor. Turns out the tumor was a rootball—some type of seed had gotten into the patient’s lungs and started to grow.”

    NoHartAnthony

13.“I had an ingrown toenail. It was supposed to be a quick fix. I was 14 and had my mom with me. They let an apprentice do the surgery, and he goes, ‘Oh shit.’ The doctor in charge just laughed and said, ‘No risk, No fun.’ Turns out they fucked up my toe, and I had to have four more surgeries to correct it. I cried.”

14.“During my third year of medical school, I was stitching up the wound after breast cancer surgery, and the anesthesiology nurse woke the patient too early as I was making my last stitch, and I felt the patient moving her arm and trying to sit up. The patient was still covered in surgery draping and cables and still intubated. Luckily most people do not remember much from the first moments after waking up but I got quite nervous from the patient starting to move.”

    Ankuzi

15.“Just an RN here. I was working in the ER and had a patient brought in by her husband.”

“Apparently the woman had a fall a week prior and injured her face but refused medical care. Her husband finally forced her to come in. As soon as I see the wound on her face (from across the room) I think, ‘that does not look like any wound I’ve seen.’ I approached her and realized maggots had infested the wound and were eating the rotting skin. A really simple and quick fix but I cant imagine her living conditions.”

16.“Not a surgeon but when I was in nursing school I was observing a tonsillectomy when the power went out.”

“Everything switched over to the backup generators except for the suction which is incredibly important for any surgery but particularly in the throat (aspiration risk). They ended up having to connect a giant syringe to a length of suction tubing to suction manually while someone went to the other side of the building to find portable suction. Luckily ours was the only theatre that had started operating that morning!”

17.“Not mine, but my father’s. He told me this back when I was 10, so I’m sorry if it doesn’t fully make sense. He had a 21-year-old patient who needed to have a penectomy. He had cancer of the penis.”

Surgical team in an operating room, standing over a patient. A sterile tray with surgical instruments is in the foreground

“There were two ‘Oh Shit’ Moments for this. The first is a common thing. He wasn’t fully asleep. The second, however, is funny and humiliating. They are about to start the surgery.

Suddenly, one of the nurses that was there suddenly threw up and left. A test later, and boom! She got knocked up! Halfway through the surgery, the other nurse leaves for a call about her father. My dad’s [nurse] was just standing there, a half-gone penis in his hand. He calls for help and is standing there, a guy’s penis in his hand for thirty minutes.”

18.“We operated on the carotids of a patient, like a gaping hole in his neck, when the patient woke up. The easy fix was shouting at the anesthesiologist… who wasn’t there. Had to hold down the head with my elbow so he wouldn’t move too much and hurt/kill himself.”

    Vulsruser

19.“When I was a nursing student, I was on theatre prac. We had a guy in who needed humerus and elbow repair.”

“I was pretty useless in everything but emotional support (as I wasn’t qualified), so was chatting to him before he went under. He admitted to having a (un)healthy meth habit. I informed the surgeon, who shrugged it off. Apparently, I should have told the anesthetist because this dude woke up mid-surgery and was trying to reach for his open arm that the surgeon was working on. Super ‘Oh shit’ moment as we scramble to contain this guy’s arm and stop it from touching anything sterile.”—NecessaryFlamingo

    20.“Not a surgeon but a biomedical scientist.”

“My office mate had his MD and was working on his PhD. He did an appendectomy and cut into this person’s abdomen, only to find no appendix, and he started freaking out. The support nurses in the room started snickering at him because they knew right away what it was. Occasionally, they see someone with a rare genetic disorder in which all their left-right asymmetries are reversed. The appendix was on the other side.”

21.“Orthopedic surgeon here. Mostly do joint replacements.”

“Having a unit of blood run down my leg while doing CPR on a patient in the trauma bay. The connector between the blood bag and the patient’s IV came loose, and no one noticed until it had basically emptied all down my leg. Mostly just felt cold. But I had to walk through the main lobby of the hospital, covered in blood, past patients, and families to get to my call room. Threw away my underwear and socks and did the rest of the 24 hr shift commando.”

„Soțul meu era afară, curând aleea când i-a observat”, a spus Janice Pantelleria.
